Informations for new students
Dear students,
welcome to our M.Sc. Medical Photonics programme. By now most of you have already made the trip to Jena. Hopefully, you have found some room to stay and managed to do get around in Jena. If you need help in organizing the new phase of your life in Jena, please refer to the website of the International Office of the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. Here, you will find some useful checklists you should consider before and after your arrival in Jena and some general information about living in Jena. To faciltate a good start of your studies the International Office offers also mentoring programmes.
On this webpage you find information about additional activities the organizers of the M.Sc. Medical Photonics programme are offering to you. This includes an orientation meeting on October 2nd and pre-courses in Mathematics and Chemitry. Students, who have little knowledge in mathematics and/or chemistry are strongly advised to attend to the lectures and work on the exercises. The kowledge taught in these courses will be needed throughout the programme. More information on these precourses can be found below.
Introduction / Orientation meetings
On October 2nd, at 10.00 a.m. we will organize a small kick-off meeting, which will give you the possibility to meet your peer students and get important information about the M.Sc. programme. The meeting will be organized in presence in seminar room 1, Bachstr. 18, building 1 (first upper floor).

On Friday, October 13th, at 17.00 p.m. a city tour will be organized by students of the 3rd semester. Meeting point is the lecture hall of the former Institute of Human Genetics, where the seminars/exercises of the Chemistry PreCourse take place (Please, follow this link for directions). Take advantage of the oprtunity to meet your new peers and to get hints and tricks from the students of the 3rd semester for surviving the first days in Jena and to have a good start in the M.Sc. Medical Photonics programme. More information about the city tour can be found here. Please, let the organizers know, if you can participate.
On October 16th (9.00 a.m.) a kick-off meeting will be organized to tackle last minute problems before the semester starts. The meeting takes place in the lecture hall in the former Institute of Human Genetics.
Pre-Course "Mathematical Methods"
To start the M.Sc. programme successfully, basic knowledge in mathematics is important. To provide you with the necessary basics an optional pre-course in mathematics is available online Information about the content of the course can be found in the module catalogue. Pre-Course "Chemistry"
To have a good start in the M.Sc. programme, also basic knowledge in chemistry is important. To provide you with the necessary basics an optional pre-course in chemistry starts, parallel to the pre-course in mathematics. More details about this module can be found here soon. Please, take also advantage of our self-assessment test to see if you should participate in this course. The test can be found here. The password will be sent to you via e-mail. Here is a list of important dates you probably do not want to miss:
- Wednesday, October 4th, 9.15 a.m.: Start of the chemistry precourse.

- Tuesday, October 10th: Deadline for the registration for courses in German as a foreign language.The Language Centre of our University offers for our international student language courses in German. Please, follow this link to apply for one of these courses.
- Friday, October 13th: Deadline for enrolment/immatriculation (Please, note that this deadline might not apply to all students. See your admission letter for the dates that apply to you and follow all steps as described in the admission letter. Apply for enrolment in the Friedolin 2.0 online application portal and upload all necessary documents and follow the steps outlined on the website of the Master Service Centre (https://www.uni-jena.de/en/master-enrolment ) and the International Office (https://www.uni-jena.de/en/start-studying-international)
