In 2020, Jena University Hospital received funding approvals for scientific projects amounting more than 32 million euros. In 2019, more than 26 million euros in third-party funding were acquired.

The third-party funds spent in 2019 consist of 28.1 million euros for current expenses, 11.3 million euros for investments and 4.3 million euros overhead. In 2020, third-party funds amounting to 28.4 million euros were used for running costs and 13.0 million euros for investments; the overhead was 4.2 million euros.

In 2020, the scientists at Jena University Hospital published their research results in 1202 articles (2019: 1017) with a summary impact of 6427 points (2019: 4218) in peer-reviewed international journals. They wrote 42 (45) textbook articles and four (three) textbooks. In addition, they are members of numerous editorial boards.

For inventions from Jena University Hospital, six patents were granted in 2019 and seven in 2020.

In 2019 and 2020, numerous publicly funded research projects were started, in total:

• 14 projects funded by the Free State of Thuringia,
• 47 DFG projects,
• five European research networks,
• 70 projects supported by the federal government,
• 61 projects funded by foundations.

The ethics committee of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is established at the medical faculty. As a scientific service provider, the Center for Clinical Studies of Jena Universital Hospital supports clinical research in the clinical centers, which are operating numerous study units.

In 2019 and 2020, Jena University Hospital started enrollment in 39 multicenter phase I / II studies and began participation in four phase II / III studies and in 95 multicenter phase III / VI studies. During the period, 26 clinical studies according to the Medicines Act were conducted, six of which investigator initiated trials, as well as further interventional and non-interventional trials. Large, publicly funded trials directed at Jena University Hospital:

• PETN obstetrics,
• ARISS sepsis intensive care
• FRESCO stool transplant
• CONNECT neuroimmunology

In 2019 and 2020, the Medical Faculty was able to acquire public funding to provide support for young scientists:

• Graduate School Jena School of Molecular Medicine: Carl Zeiss Foundation
• second funding phase for the Else Kröner Research College AntiAge
• as part of the EU-funded Innovative Training Networks  TIPAT, ONCORnet, SmartAge
• Junior research group within the SMITH consortium. 

The Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research serves as the umbrella for the young talent funding programs, which were restructured in accordance with the recommendations of the Science Council and the DFG. In 2019, calls in the new funding lines Clinician Scientist, Advanced Clinician Scientist, Medical Scientist, and Advanced Medical Scientistand were published for the first time. In 2019 and 2020, a total of

• 65 doctoral scholarships (of which 44 women)
• 25 Clinician Scientist grants (14 women)
• 6 Advanced Clinician Scientist grants (all women)
• 9 Medical Scientist grants (6 women)
• 10 Advanced Medical Scientist grants (6 women)

be awarded.

The annual Summer School Molecular Medicine, which is funded by the DAAD, contributes to the internationalization of the promotion of young researchers. In 2019, 23 scientists (16 women) from 13 countries took part. Ten participants were won in a competitive process for a doctoral project in Jena. Due to the pandemic, the summer school could not take place in 2020.

The courses for the more than 2500 students at the Jena Medical Faculty suddenly and almost without exception had to be  switched to online offerings in spring 2020. With great commitment and a talent for improvisation, the teachers developed digital courses.

The office of the students' dean, IT department, media center and student assistants offer methodical and technical support in the digital teaching work group. Investments in hardware and software create successively better technical conditions. Examples are the 1,183 instructional videos that were produced in 2020 and viewed 117,872 times on the DOSIS platform.
