Jena and its environs
Jena is a university city in central Germany on the river Saale. With a population of 108,000 including 17.500 students it is the second largest city in the federal state of Thuringia.
Jena is more than 800 years old and combines century-old buildings with modern structures. The city's economy diversifies into bioinformatics, biotechnology, software and photonics leading to a fast growing region with many internationally renowned research institutes and companies. Jena’s environment is outstanding. The hills surrounding the town allow fantastic views and the Saale River flows along old castles and vineyards.
Other prominent cities like Weimar, known for its cultural heritage and the Weimar classicism, and Erfurt, a more than 1200 years old town with an intact medieval city centre, are close.
Housing
Housing of the candidates (free of charge) will be arranged by the organizers. Double rooms with bathrooms on the same floor are available in youth hostels in the centre of Jena. Participants have the possibility of preparing meals in communal kitchens. In addition, meals at own expenses are provided in Jena University Hospital canteens. The laboratories participating in the summer school can be reached with 15 and 30 min by bus or tram.
