New approaches in cancer prevention, diagnosis and monitoring
What does this approach include?
Diagnosis at an early stage of nearly all cancer entities is critical for successful therapeutic intervention. The availability of novel molecular and imaging tools form the basis for the development of new markers and strategies not only for diagnosis but also for prevention and disease monitoring. This research is fostered by existing Core Units (e.g. Core Unit Chip Application), cooperation within networks of excellence, e. g. the European LeukemiaNet, and association to integrated research centers (e. g. IZKF, ZeMOP). The research activities in this field are highlighted by translational projects which deal with chip based diagnosis on gene, protein and epigenetic level as well as nanotechnology, antibody-based therapy and imaging techniques.
Here we present two interdisciplinary projects which focus on the early detection of cancer. One project deals with identification and validation of biomarkers for the detection of asymptomatic ovarian and renal cell carcinomas. The other project uses a multimodal imaging approach to detect early stages of cancers in the aero-digestive tract.
