About us
Jena University Hospital is the only university hospital in Thuringia with a history stretching back over 200 years. Our tradition of medical teaching is even older - as one of the founding faculties of Jena University, the Faculty of Medicine can look back on over 450 years of experience. Today, with more than 7,000 employees in 31 clinics and polyclinics as well as 26 institutes and independent working groups, around 2,700 students and more than 450 trainees from 88 nations, the UKJ is the largest employer and training organisation in the Free State of Thuringia.
We bear a special responsibility for Thuringia and are committed to its citizens in our work in research, teaching and patient care. As a supramaximal care provider, our experts in almost all specialities treat patients on the basis of the latest scientific findings.
By transferring new research findings into practice and society, university medicine contributes to the establishment of new therapies. In this way, the UKJ acts as an engine for start-ups, a magnet for new companies and a development partner for innovative companies in biomedicine, drug development and medical technology - and makes an important contribution to Thuringia as a centre of science and business.

We train the doctors of tomorrow - for Thuringia. A number of laboratories, seminar rooms and lecture theatres are available to our students of human medicine, dentistry and four Master's degree programmes. The medical library in Lobeda has space for 111,000 volumes. In the SkillsLab Jena at the "Bachstraße" site, prospective doctors can practise practical skills.

As a super-maximum care provider, we have 1,451 beds available. Every year, we treat more than 47,000 inpatients and carry out over 540,000 outpatient consultations.
Most of the UKJ clinics are concentrated at the "Lobeda" site. Only the clinics for psychiatry, psychosomatics and paediatric and adolescent psychiatry are located at the "Philosophenweg" site.

We support the coordination of medical care in the state, for example via telemedical networks. In order to provide the best possible patient care close to home, we work together with other regional hospitals and share our expertise with our specialist colleagues on the basis of constructive dialogue.

Various construction projects that have been realised at the "Lobeda" site since the turn of the millennium have significantly improved the framework conditions for our daily work. This structural development will continue.
