Sepsis and Sepsis Sequelae

Sepsis is a life-threatening systemic infection with a high mortality of more than 50 % which affects people of all ages. In spite of the immense progress in modern clinical treatment and the exploration of the molecular biological basics, sepsis still presents a huge challenge for physicians and the health system. In Germany, the acute treatment of sepsis alone incurs costs of 1.7 billion Euros per year. Clinical sepsis research aims to target lethality and morbidity as well as to improve prevention and after-care. To expand the knowledge of molecular mechanisms and of organ failure, experimental sepsis research combines clinical aspects with questions in fundamental research.

Age and Age related Diseases

The aging population and the associated increase in age-related diseases represent a challenge for the health care system. The study of aging and associated degenerative diseases also includes aberrations at a young age. Main issues here are neurological recovery processes and the mechanisms of pain and inflammation in chronic diseases.

Signalling in Cells

(focus Dynamics of Complexe Biological Systems)

Using biochemical approaches and biophysical techniques of cell biology, the signalling reactions of selected regulatory proteins are investigated in correlation with the concomitant functional pattern of cells in physiological and pathological states. We follow the idea of differential reactions of signalling proteins as the basis for multiple regulatory activities. Using the heuristic potential of this working hypothesis we aim to contribute to the perception of complex signalling reactions in cells and organisms.

Medical Optics and Photonics

(focus Optics, Photonics und photonic Technologies)

Optical and photonic technologies are essential tools in biomedical research. This includes both microscopy techniques that allow a view of molecules and structures have in the living cell, a variety of spectroscopic methods for diagnosis, as well as the use of optical technologies in therapy, for example in ophthalmology.
